09-257 Saturday September 5th at 4:27 am Stations 19, 29, and 59 were dispatched to a working commercial building fire at 75 South Cherry Street. Rescue 11 arrived on the scene at 4:33 am finding heavy smoke coming from the first floor doors and eves and connected to the hydrant at the back of the Post Office on Center Street. The Knox Box key was obtained to make entry into the first flood, however the lock had been changed by the renters without notifying the owners so a new key could be placed in the box. After breaking the front windows, firefighters made entry about 15 feet into the first room when the atmosphere became extremely hot and heavier black smoke started banking down on the firefighters. Chief 101 pulled the crew out at that point and made entry into the north office door. The Knox Box key worked on this door. Firefighters worked their way to the back of the structure, but could not find the fire. Chief 101 pulled the crew out and then they moved to the basement door on the north end of the structure and made entry. Engine 15 had arrived on the scene and had connected to the hydrant at Marion and Cherry Street laying into the fire, Tower 18 had arrived in the back of the and had connected to the hydrant between the Church and the Post Office. At this point firefighters made entry into the basement door at the South West corner of the structure finding fire from ceiling to floor and wall to wall. Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down to a manageable condition and made deeper entry until the floor started to collapse into the room. The fire had extended to the attic and the second floor. Firefighters fought the fire until 8:01 am when it was brought under control. At one point in time the roof on the back side South corner showed indications of failure so the fire was attacked by hand lines spraying water through the attic vents at both ends. Firefighters remained on the scene until 4:08 pm making sure that any hot spots were extinguished. The State Fire Marshal Arson investigator was called and arrived at 10:26 am. Firefighters assisted the investigator with determining the cause and origin of the fire until 4:00 pm. The fire has been determined as suspicious in nature. Lana Fate, mother of Diana McLain of Mt. Gilead, had her belongings stored in the basement area at the time of the fire and none of these items were insured. The building however was insured. At this time the State Fire Marshal, Mt. Gilead Police Department and Fire Department are handling the investigation
